Fig jam, for toasts and dishes full of originality
Thanks to its unique taste and rich aroma, fig jam is excellent for enhancing various preparations. It lends itself readily to unusual combinations. With this product, our Ardèche master jam makers ensure an authentic preparation in order to preserve all the flavor and originality of the fruit.
The fig, a delicate and tasty fruit
The fig is a false fruit, in the sense that it is not a seed from a flower. In fact, it is a kind of receptacle that contains a multitude of tiny seeds, the real fruits of the tree. This originality makes all the flavor of the fig: the small seeds form a delicious flesh, wrapped in a perfumed skin .
Harvesting figs requires special attention. They should only be picked when they are fully ripe , when they are about to fall off the tree. This is very important because once picked, they do not ripen any further. Delicate, the fruits harvested in this way can be kept for a maximum of 2 days.
To guarantee the quality of the fig jam and avoid any alteration of the fruit, Ardèche producers only use French figs from neighboring regions .
A jam prepared the old-fashioned way
To make fig jam, the flesh and skin are put in a cauldron and cooked over an open fire. The final product thus restores all the richness of the fruit. The taste and aroma are preserved thanks to the simplicity of the process.
The added ingredients are reduced to the bare minimum:
-
Sugar, from France;
-
Pectin , knowing that the fig is not rich enough in pectin to ensure good grip and maintenance of the texture over time;
-
Lemon juice , which serves as an acidifier. It enriches the taste of the jam while contributing to its good conservation.
This fig jam does not contain any chemical additives . No artificial coloring or preservatives: you can consume it safely.
How to enjoy fig jam?
Just like fresh or dried fruit, fig jam can be consumed in many ways. In addition to its classic use on toast, pancakes and waffles , it also lends itself to more original preparations.
Here are some combinations you can try:
-
Fig jam goes very well with cheese : it will be excellent on a goat's cheese and honey toast;
-
It is also wonderful with almonds . For a deliciously original verrine, add crushed almonds and a layer of fig jam;
-
If you like sweet and salty, don't hesitate to put a little of this jam in your chutney-type sauces to accompany liver for example;
-
Chocolate and fig make an irresistible duo : in a tart, a roll or muffins, the choice is yours;
-
Combined with other fruits , fig jam brings a particular aroma and taste. You can use it to enhance a pear or raspberry tart.
